You shouldn't be focusing on any one problem in
your workplace. You should step back and look at
your general workplace experience. Without this
overall view, you will end up with isolated products
for every problem you are trying to solve.
This is true with any workplace requirement,
including COVID-19. It's just an extra set of priorities, and many of the features we put in today are
hopefully not needed soon. It's important to think
long term and how your UX will adapt to the
ever-changing requirements.
The technology solution can connect to location
services and user proﬁle information to provide
internal contact tracing. This can include workﬂows
that trigger automatically if too many people are in
a zone, room or ﬂoor. Access control integration
can allow the building to physically keep people out
of areas they are not approved to be in. How strict

Today, we are breaking down legacy silos between
the tenancy and the building, and soon this problem
will be solved at the network level. Instead of every
tenancy having their own network of devices, each
device will have public addresses, breaking them
out of their network silos. This will change the way
technology is delivered and managed in the
construction and real estate industries.
There are two technologies enabling this today:
IPv6, that gives us the ability to assign a public
address to every device in the world and the
Thread protocol, which is a wireless communication layer that runs on IPv6. This combination
allows a huge volume of devices to communicate
to each other. This generates new automation
possibilities and large datasets that can provide
building insights.
Cisco is known for being at the forefront of network
technology, and this is no exception. Many of their
network products support both IPv6 and Thread
protocol, but the current barrier to entry is caused
by internet service providers not always enabling
IPv6 addresses on their network.
Ultimately, when Thread and IPv6 become more
widely adopted, there will be an even stronger need
for smart building platforms that can bring everything together as a uniﬁed solution.
