including, but not limited to, solar load, occupancy
and the zone envelope. As previously mentioned,
the global headquarters project used a DOAS
system to help ventilate specific zones and accommodate subsequent latent cooling loads. Once the
latent load and ventilation requirements within the
specific zone were determined, the system was
designed to provide outdoor air at a temperature
and volume to address these requirements as
efficiently as possible.

The ASHRAE design team also used radiant
technology to address heating and cooling
requirements throughout the three floors of the
new ASHRAE facility. The primary benefit associated with a hydronic-based system is, of course,
energy efficiency. The heat transfer efficiency and
capacity of water as opposed to an all-air system
provides a reduction in the energy used to transport an equivalent amount of heat. By shifting the
sensible cooling and heating load to the zones in
which these products are installed, fan energy can
then be reduced. Combining the sensible cooling
of the radiant system with a DOAS unit allowed
the design team to reduce the amount of total air
provided to the space and therefore reduce the
number and size of fans on the project.
Radiant panels are a hydronic product that heat or
cool a space using thermal radiation and natural
convection and are independent of ventilation

The new ASHRAE
Global Headquarters incorporated over 15,000 ft2
(1394 m2) of radiant panels into the new design.
The reduced air volume provided into the space
greatly reduces issues pertaining to drafts or noise
that might have otherwise existed with the existing
air system. Drafts and noise are two of the most
common sources of discomfort cited in existing
office space. The increased cooling capacity of
water versus air facilitates significant reductions in
the size of the transport system. Smaller diameter
piping replaces much larger ductwork, which is
also advantageous when ceiling space is limited.
Reducing the number of risers throughout a
building also frees up space, which assists in
accomplishing other functional and aesthetic
project goals.
The new ASHRAE Global Headquarters is a
showpiece for modern day sustainability and
energy-efficient design practices. With thousands
of visitors coming through the facility and seeing
firsthand how leading-edge technologies and
design practices were integrated, ASHRAE Global
Headquarters will assuredly become an inspiration
for industry professionals worldwide and will
further compel them to embrace their responsibility
for providing cleaner, healthier and more energyconscious projects. Price Industries was extremely
proud to have participated in this initiative, and we
look forward to learning more from the extensive
research and information that will be generated
from this state-of-the-art facility.
