Phoenix Rising
Some might say that the DPR
Construction Phoenix Regional
Office is a high performing building overachiever. It accomplishes
goals of urban revitalization, adaptive reuse and net zero energy in
a desert climate. When conditions permit, a passive cooling
and ventilation system draws air
in through operable windows and
"shower towers," exhausting it
via a passively heated solar chimney. Occupants also contribute to
the buildings' low annual energy
use intensity of 26.8 kBtu/ft2 by
accepting a wider temperature
range and making other adjustments. Operational savings from
the building's sustainable design
are expected to result in an eightyear payback.

HIGH
Visitors come to the Maine Coastal
Botanical Gardens' Bosarge Family
Education Center to improve their
green thumbs, hear a concert or to
celebrate a wedding. But, designers
hope visitors will walk away realizing
that net zero energy buildings are
possible today even in cold climates.
A super efficient envelope includes 1
ft thick walls and triple-glazed windows, which keep out the cold while
providing views of the surrounding
gardens. A panelized construction

design of Richardsville (Ky.)
Elementary, the nation's first net
zero energy school? Hint: It would
involve a lot more than changing
out the lightbulbs. The hypothetical
redesign of Richardsville, which
opened in 2010, eliminates parts
of the original daylighting design
and involves architectural changes.
The revised design also replaces
the somewhat problematic lighting
dimming control system with
manual controls. The result: a
building that would maintain net
zero energy status and cost $90,000
less to build.
