The next 10 years in our industry will en-
counter a paradigm shift in the ways in
which we communicate and exchange
information across the spectrum of
industry stakeholders. Video clips,
virtual meetings in real time, electronic
data interface platforms and other like
communication vectors will be relied
upon more heavily in the upcoming
decade. Paramount to increasing the
efficiency of these communication
vehicles will be increased training
and education efforts on the part of
all stakeholders, including owners/
developers, architects/engineers and
tradespersons installing the building product components. Real-time
communications, especially virtual
meetings, will decrease the time now
taken to resolve immediate problems
in the field as well as increase the
efficacy of the information shared
during all phases of construction.
The use of video clips will offer both
real-time and historical references
for each stakeholder up and down
the timeline of a project's life cycle.
Assets like electronic data interface
platforms will be utilized to increase
efficiencies along the supply chain,
especially when considering the poten-
tial for direct links between architect/
engineer, contractor, distributor and
manufacturer. Regardless of how these
new communication vehicles develop,
there is one thing for sure: We will be
much more closely connected than
ever before!

develop advancements with energy
efficient building code requirements.
New technology will drive the building envelope in changing standard
practices with continuous insulation,
drainage planes, HVAC systems and
the ever-changing ASTM standards.
The fast pace building requirements
are creating an even faster learning
curve for the installation of a successful
exterior wall cladding.
New OSHA standards are changing
at a pace the OSHA officers are finding hard to maintain. The new silica
standard will dominate the industry
changing every aspect of the old ways
to protect employees. OSHA's outreach will continue to make standard
business practices a challenging task.
Residential markets will begin to
feel the same restrictions commercial
construction has been under for years.
Skilled labor has already begun to
grow scarce.
The next 10
The manufacturing of pre-blended
materials has taken even more skill and
knowledge away from the employees,
leaving it even harder to find experienced help. Without the initiation of
trade schools and apprentice programs,
we will continue to see a depleted
workforce as inflation grows, wages
rise and the construction square-foot
price stalls.

How will the industry
change in the
next 10 years? If the next 10 years
change as much as the last 10 years,
it will completely change the way we
do our business-some might suggest
it could be overwhelming for some.
We have moved from being totally
manual with everything to all technology based. Today we communicate
by email, iPads and, yes, iPhone 7
Plus (of course). We have eliminated
most of the verbal communication as
a result. As an example, all bid work,
proposals, change orders, contracts,
billing and collections are being done
by computers. This has required our
business to implement the software
and computers necessary to meet
the ongoing change in technology
advances. These changes are requiring
us to rethink the type of personnel we

Most of the responses describe
the evolving role technology will
play in the construction industry. The application of evolving
technology is seen as a solution
to the growing shortage of skill
labored. The prognosticators
do not see the labor problem
easing. Instead, they foretell the
growing use of offsite prefabrication, and 24/7 project delivery
teams communications will lead
to increased productivity and
safety. The worker skill sets will
evolve from stick-built construction with current tools to
prefabricated components with
some degree of onsite robotic
installation. No one is projecting
the end of construction workers
as they now contribute, but they
will become more skilled in the
application of technology assists.
Productivity will increase with
real-time team digital communications with intelligent/intuitive
data exchange. There will be less
and less direct human communication. Projects will be
managed more remotely with
webcams, drones and proximity
systems. No prediction about
the future would be complete
without references to the great
potential of 3-D printing.
