The effects of Covid-19
still impact 2021 in many
ways. For my generation, as
well as other generations,
an event like this had never
been experienced during
our lifetimes. Every moment
felt new and often unusual
as our daily operational
routines were impacted. But
when able to step back from
the situation, historically
you find our world has
dealt with pandemics
previously and with much
less technology.
Life in February 2020 was
defined as " normal " to me. It
is said that elements of this
pandemic will carry through
to make future generations
even better and create a new
definition of normal. But at
the heart of it will it truly be
much different? This is your
smile or point of reflection
moment.
In 2021 I had my first
experience of driving a
Tesla. The whole experience
felt completely new to me.
A super-fast car that didn't
make a sound. No air intake
or exhaust in the design. No
lag of shifting gears. None
of these concepts aligned
with any of my previous
experiences of driving a
muscle car. The smiles were
many that night, but upon
reflection, it is still just a
means of transportation.
Somewhere, someone felt
the same way when they
traded their horse for a
model T. Sure there is more
comfort and sure there is
more efficiency but there
will always be a list of tradeoffs
involved to evaluate.
Experiencing New
Standards
Throughout 2021 many
experienced the newAWI
Standards. While the long
numerical format has been
dropped, prescription
has been replaced with
performance, and although
it is divided into smaller
pamphlets, it still serves as
a quality industry standard
meant to service all. Many
founding principles of
previous standards are
still inherent in the new
format. Modifications,
clarity, and public consensus
hopefully create a new
path to lead our industry
into future generations. I
trust when the process is
complete AWI Standards
will represent owners, the
design community, and
manufacturers so that all
may enjoy success when
using our quality industry
standard.

Experiencing Great
Quality
October 1, 2021, we
completed the process of
the Quality Certification
Program integration back
into AWI. Titles changed,
a compliance division was
created, but through it
all the feel and function
of a fantastic Quality
Certification Program
remains the same.
Bylaws and policies are
set in place to ensure the
autonomy of the program
will exist. A quality team
led byGreg Parham,
AWI Vice President of
Compliance, will safeguard
that the integrity is not
compromised, and the
intent of the program will
be executed to the fullest.
The heart and function
remain the same, ensuring
that project specifications
are met to benefit all
owners, designers, and
manufacturers mutually.
