Winning Woodwork
Imperial was tasked
to deliver complete
environments, reports Frank
Huschitt, Jr. " This was a
monumental project with
many unique areas. Imperial
delivered the entire suite
of finishes including wood
paneling; arched portals;
elaborate coffered ceilings;
engraved logos; leather
wrapped panels; bleacher,
stone, and stainless loge
tables; repurposed bleacher
seating transformed into
accent paneling; doors and
jambs; elevator lobbies; and
columns. "
The woods specified
were rift White Oak used for
the majority of spaces, as
well as Walnut, Walnut Burl,
and Ebonized Oak. Lineal,
fine grain, and little to no
character was the desired
effect. " We sourced over
60 flitches, approximately
225,000 square feet of veneer,
mostly from Indiana based
sources and Indiana grown
and harvested forests. There
were a few special spaces in
the project where a heavily
figured rift White Oak was
introduced. All veneer panels
were book and balanced,
blueprint matched. In addition
to the wood veneer finishes,
we provided coordinated
lacquer elements in hospitality
areas and utilized reclaimed
bleacher wood in running and
herringbone patterns, " notes

This was an enormous
woodwork installation that was
completed in an extremely
tight schedule, adds Ansel.
" The solution was to complete
the work in sub-assemblies,
fabricated and finished off site.
These required exceptional
precision to fit together,
which was accomplished to a
high degree. "
High Scores
The interesting part of this
project was that there were
many different types of areas
designed for specific functions
for a varied group of users,
explains Huschitt. " In some
respects, it was like many
different yet cohesive projects
culminating in one exceptional
800,000 square foot project.
The most noteworthy areas
were the four stadium-length
corridors on levels 7 and 8 of
the East and West buildings
overlooking the stadium.
The stadium-length corridors
were flanked with 56 nearly
identical arches, all with
the Notre Dame 'ND' logo
engraved on the columns. "
These corridors open to two
large ballroom areas, one in
the East building and one in
the West building, that are
surrounded by matching wood
pilasters and extensive wood
coffered ceilings.
