Khaya was chosen
for both its long-term
durability and appropriately
warm look, Knight says.
" Stained woodwork was the
expectation for the college's
public spaces, including
the entrance lobby, great
room, dining room, and
related connecting foyers
and corridors. The scope of
woodwork in these areas
includes running trim,
wainscoting, and coffered
ceilings.

singles, doubles and fourperson
suites, which include
a kitchen, common space
and four singles. The singles
located in four-person suites
are around the same size as
stand-alone singles. While
the number of windows in
each room/suite varies, each
common area and bedroom
has at least one window.
Each residential floor
has two open lounges and
additional study nooks
that are card-accessible to
residents only. Residential
floors also have a variety
of bathrooms, with around
half being gender-neutral,
single-user and half being
multi-user. Water fountains
and bottle fillers are installed
on each floor. The hallways
in the residential floors are
carpeted, while the rooms
have laminate flooring.

The dining hall seats
approximately 150 students
and is open for breakfast,
lunch and dinner in an allyou-can-eat
style. The college
also has a Munchie Mart and
Grab&Go shop.
The Great Room and the
lobby share the same " highend "
details as the dining
hall. Steel windows in the
dining hall and main areas
were handmade for the
college. The main floor of the
Great Room is available to
all students, but the upper
floor serves as a student
common space accessible

box theater-a simple
performance space-is
located in Rothschild and is
open to all members of the
Vanderbilt community. The
space holds approximately
130 people and is used in
part for theater courses.
Challenges and
Teamwork
" The radiused trim
and radiused casing and
mouldings were the biggest
trademark of the project, "
says McCauley. " We had over
250 different trim details
over the course of 17 phases.
The Great Room was also
challenging. Our design
engineering team played
a key role in translating
the drawings and designs
and transferring them
over to our manufacturing
team. Specifically, the trim
layout and breaking down
of profiles. We put the job
with as many installers
as we could. Our working
relationship with the architect
was good, and we had a lot
of communication with them,
especially on the trim. "
The pointed arch
surrounds and casings of the
Dining Room and Great Room
windows and doors have a
comparatively high degree
of intricacy, notes Knight.
" An interesting challenge can
be found with the ceilings
in the public spaces. They
are constructed primarily
with suspended acoustic tile
to allow ease of overhead
access and maintenance
while affording some positive
acoustical properties to these
areas. To fit with the project's
aesthetic goals, however, the
ceilings needed to take on
a more coffered appearance
with wood trim. To resolve
these two aims, we hit on an
interesting solution: creating
ornamental battens that cover
the suspended ceiling grids
to maintain an appropriately
coffered ceiling look. "
We initially specified
Honduran Mahogany for
the project, but we quickly
learned that this was a cost
challenge for the extent of
woodwork envisioned, he
adds. " Remmert was very
helpful in showing us other
more cost-effective (and
sustainable) options and
we ultimately chose Khaya
African Mahogany because
it was more readily available
and cost effective. Remmert
also delivered a high level of
service during the submittal
process and a good level
of craftsmanship and care
during construction. "
