JACK CHIASSON, CAE
NAILBA CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
I
t's summer-my absolute favorite time of year. I know I've told
you this before, so I'll spare you
all the reasons why, but just remember that this is a good time of year
for me. It's probably a good time to
ask for a favor!
I'm going to go "off-topic" this
month and talk about the NAILBA
Annual Meeting, and the changes
that you will see starting with
NAILBA 33 later this year. I suspect
that you might like to know a bit
more about the WHY of some of these
changes (the WHAT is the easy stuff.)
Let's start with the over-arching reason behind the changes. One
of the challenges that any organization faces is in knowing whether or not you are still meeting your
members' needs, wants, and expectations. Recent Annual Meeting
surveys-both formal and informal-indicated that there may be a
"problem" in answering that question in the affirmative. So the discussion began.
For those of you who have been
around a while, you will acknowledge
that there has been no significant
change to the NAILBA Annual
Meeting schedule in a VERY long
time-more than 10 years. We heard
from members that they didn't have
enough time to meet-and actually
conduct business-with carriers and
vendors. We heard from carriers and
vendors that they needed to have
more of this time as well. We heard
that a lot of folks really wanted to
get home before the weekend. We
heard that EVERYONE wanted more
time to "network"-to meet with
colleagues and friends without a
program or agenda. We heard that
the most important "take-aways"
from the NAILBA Annual Meeting
may have been happening in the
hotel hallways (or maybe in the
lounges and bars-not really sure
how I feel about THAT!) We heard
from a lot of our smaller-sized BGA
members that they felt a bit "lost
in the shuffle"-that maybe NAILBA
had gotten too big for them.
This is a LOT of valuable information...and you will see some specific
recurring themes in it.
So a small group of NAILBA Board
members and staff got to work and
looked at EVERYTHING that happens
at a NAILBA Meeting. There were
some things that we HAD to do
(those items called for in our Bylaws
for example), some things that we
WANTED to do (or continue doing-
like the Mooers Award Dinner), and
some things that we could eliminate.
You can see the results of these
efforts in the all-new Agenda on
pages 17-21 of this issue.
Let me give you some specifics
on a few items in particular.
I'll start with the Mooers
Award Dinner. The Mooers Award is
arguably the most prestigious award
in the industry, yet each year fewer
people seemed to want to attend the
dinner on Friday night. Moving the
presentation to Thursday night will
allow more of you to help celebrate
the achievements of the recipient-
and offer your congratulations in
person. We've also "beefed up" the
entertainment to make the overall
event a more memorable experience
for everyone. Yes, and the dinner
itself is pretty nice, too!
Time to actually conduct business
has been enhanced by adding a
block of time specifically set aside
for members to meet with carriers
and vendors. We will be encouraging
carriers and vendors to use at least
part of this time to meet with some
of the smaller-sized BGAs-that
"personal touch" from a carrier CEO,
for example, may help make them
a BIGGER BGA in your distribution
plan. Helping a BGA grow-isn't that
a huge part NAILBA's overall mission?
And finally, it will now be very
easy to take part in the ENTIRE
NAILBA Annual Meeting and still be
home on the weekend. Unless you're
going to stay for the golf event
on Saturday morning, there's no
significant obstacle to getting you
home early on Saturday morning-
no matter where you live. Since the
NAILBA Annual Meeting takes place
in either the Eastern or Central
time zones each year, you WILL be
able to get home to spend that allimportant time with your family-
without having to give up any part
of the NAILBA event.
Give the all-new NAILBA 33
schedule a try, and tell us how you
like it. You can't do that unless you
attend, so make plans now to attend
NAILBA 33 in Hollywood, Florida. And
make sure you share your thoughts-
that's the only way we can know if
we're getting it right.
See you next time!
