The Highlights: The ambition for this
10-month renovation was threefold: to
create an extraordinary experience for
the visitor, design structures that are in
harmony with their natural setting, and
minimize human impact on the environment.
Keeping things eco-conscious was key to
this rehab of 1990s buildings. Very aware
that human intervention on a landscape
leaves an almost permanent impression, Fox
Browne architect Jack Alexander made the
architectural gesture as simple as possible
by using the form of the buildings to draw
a single, straight line in the sand, forming a
counterpoint to the organic, sweeping curves
and natural shapes of the desert.

SCP REDMOND

The Highlights: Named after one of Houston's " founding mothers, " Charlotte Baldwin
Allen, this property is a tribute to the tenacity and strength of the Texas women
who founded the state, shaped it, and still nurture it every day. This celebration
travels throughout and behind the scenes, as the hotel design was conceived by
architect/designer Lauren Rottet, while the restaurants and bar were done by
woman-led design firm Rohe Creative. Even the guestroom photography features
notable Texas photographer Elizabeth Conley. The goal is to leave guests with the
message that the sky is the limit in life and to be inspired by the legacy you can
leave, by what you can create, by what you can make happen.

The Highlights: Designers revived a historic
building from 1928 for emerging hospitality
group Soul Community Planet's second hotel.
The original detailing was preserved and
the classic details celebrated by integrating
eco-conscious, modern design with SCP's
trademark environmental ethos. Regional,
sustainably sourced materials are highlighted
by a palette of earth tones inspired by the
surrounding Oregon landscape. Lush living
plant installations adorn the public spaces
and give special meaning to " breathing in
new life, " while the original fir floors were
refurbished throughout, giving the interior
spaces a warm, familiar glow.
