differently and at many levels- from
the care we deliver in our clinical areas
and community settings, to working
upstream with community organizations,
bringing clinicians, families and
teams together. Solutions will require
that we partner humbly, lending our
expertise to each other to affect outcomes.
We'll continue to learn as we
improve and advance the care that we
are providing to children.
Finally, as a member of the CHA
Board of Trustees and the Quality
and Safety Committee, and in my role
as CEO of Intermountain Primary
Children's Hospital, I think about
what will be required of leadership
to help us move forward. We must
broaden our thinking and ask important
questions about how we will
prioritize resources, investments and
our time differently moving forward.
We need to not only grasp and set the
vision but understand our current
state and the gaps we must close to
achieve the end point.
In the next stage of the journey to
improve the quality of children's health
care and achieve
better outcomes,
we will reflect on
the wisdom and
lessons from the
giants of quality

embrace a new generation of leaders
who bring energy and ideas to accelerate
and move this work forward across
our organizations, on the front lines
and in partnership with others.

A lifetime of experience
Throughout her 60-year (and counting) career, this
nurse finds happiness helping others.
ANN PADDOCK, LPN, has been working
as a nurse longer than many of her
colleagues have been alive. Paddock's
dedication to patients, fellow staff
members, and working at Golisano
Children's Hospital at The University of
Rochester Medical Center in New York
has been evident throughout her 60-year
career. Aided by her sense of humor and
love for helping others, Paddock has
spent 57 years working as a pediatric
nurse. Here, she reflects on her career.
AN EARLY START: Ever since I was
young, I enjoyed taking care of people.
Becoming a nurse seemed like a
natural fit as I was a member of the
Future Nurses' Club in high school. I
had the chance to work in a hospital
two or three times each month under
the tutelage of a professional nurse.
A LONG-RANGING PERSPECTIVE
ON MEDICINE: One of the things I've
enjoyed the most has been witnessing
medical advancements that save lives
in the face of once-incurable conditions.
When I first came into this career, there
were very few antibiotics, there was no
treatment for cancer. That's what I've
enjoyed seeing come along, seeing how
far we've advanced in medicine.
PUTTING ON HER SCRUBS AND
PERSEVERING: What gets me out
of bed each morning to come to
the hospital and keeps me going
is simple: I love working with the
people, doctors, nurses, and patients
especially. Working with the people,
it's the best part. We've always had
a great group of nurses, and I'm
grateful for the friendships that have
been built here. "
ADVICE FOR NEW NURSES: If you like
working with patients and families,
go and enjoy it. It's a great profession.
Enjoy every day of it.
