Dressings with cartoon
themes help kids recover
from traumatic surgeries.
FROM MINIONS to Hello Kitty to
Spiderman, Matthew Greives, M.D.,
Thomas D. Cronin Chair of Plastic
Surgery at Children's Memorial
Hermann Hospital in Houston, is
helping kids heal - one dressing
at a time. Using colorful surgical
dressings, stickers, foam shapes
and anything else he finds around
the hospital, Greives fashions
his patients' post-surgery head
bandages into fun characters.
CREATIVE INFLUENCE: " In general,
plastic surgeons are taught to
think outside the box; you have to
design surgeries that create form
and function. That's what we do for
a living. So, I do think it tends to
attract people who are maybe a little
more on the artistic side. I used to
do a ton of art, photography and stuff
like that. My mom is a huge crafter.
In fact, she makes all my OR hats.
I've got 50 or 60 of them. She was
always making and repurposing
things as I grew up, so I think it's just
something I picked up from her. "
FAVORITE DRESSING: " I'm a huge
Captain America fan. That's my
personal favorite dressing, and
it was the first one we started
doing. Then we personalized it for
each patient. The original Captain
America has an 'A' on his helmet, but
we've started putting the kid's initial
there instead. So, in a sense, we're
making the child the superhero. "

MOTIVATION: " I love that people
respond so positively to them.
Putting a dressing on at the end of
surgery is part of what I must do to
make sure we have a good outcome.
Taking an extra five minutes to make
it a little more special and knowing
I made their day a little brighter and
made them smile - you don't often
find these little nuggets of joy in any
hospital. I think it's great. "
