CHA COLLABORATES WITH
advocacy groups and professional
organizations to support
military-connected families. CHA
is a member of the TRICARE for
Kids Coalition, a group focused
on ensuring the military health
system meets the unique health
needs of the 2 million children
covered by TRICARE. Additionally,
CHA has joined the Elizabeth Dole
Foundation's Hidden Helpers
Coalition that supports youth who
serve as caregivers to a wounded,
ill, or injured veteran. The coalition
of more than 100 public and
private organizations includes
Nemours Children's Health,
which has created a professional
development course to help
health care providers understand
and support children and teens
who have parents with servicerelated
injuries or illnesses.
Preventing gun violence
ADVOCACY & PARTNERSHIPS
FIREARMS ARE THE leading cause of child death in the
U.S. That sobering statistic has led many children's
hospitals to take actions to reduce access to guns. By
counseling families on safe firearm storage and engaging
with community violence prevention partners, pediatric
organizations are attempting to make communities safer
for children. Libby Ireson, MD, a research pediatrician and
CHA public affairs intern, is compiling information about
the type of gun violence prevention efforts children's
hospitals are leading. Of 25 hospitals that responded to an
initial request for information, 24 were engaged in lethal
means access reduction efforts and 16 were involved
in hospital or community-based violence intervention/
interruption programming. The work accounted for some
200 unique gun violence prevention activities.
