Planning Process
For language access to become
an integrated part of the
planning process, teams need
to do more than just complain
about being an afterthought.

small team of language
professionals worked
together to transition a
school district's translation
and interpreting needs from
being an afterthought to a
fully integrated part of the
planning process.

times a day, every day.
Our Office of Translation
and Interpretation-part
of the Department of
Communications and
Community Engagement
in the fifth largest school
district in Texas-serves
about 130 schools and almost
75,000 students, of which
31%, at the time, were
English language learners.

Our small team of
translators and interpreters
was charged with meeting
the language access needs
of the district's students
and families, translating
communications at both
the campus and district
level, including crisis
communications, and
providing interpreting for
school and districtwide
events. During the 2021-22
school year, the team
translated more than 2,000
documents and provided
interpreting at about 800
events.
As part of the Department
of Communications and
Community Engagement, we
routinely work against the
clock. The expectation is that
documents will be translated
fast enough to be published
bilingually. The problem with
this expectation? For years,
