ATA's
Public Relations
Committee:
Promoting the
Professions
By Jamie Hartz and Molly Yurick
Here's a look at how the PR Committee interacts
with the media, as well as the efforts of ATA's
Writers Group to publish articles in blog format
for increased exposure for the organization
and its members.
he goal of ATA's Public
Relations Committee
can be stated in a few
words: to promote our
professions. We do this by:
y Promoting ATA and the
translation and interpreting
professions through public
awareness activities. (The
committee often works
on such initiatives in
conjunction with ATA's
Advocacy Committee.)
y Analyzing, developing,
and coordinating media
communications for the
Association.
y Responding to media
inquiries about the
profession and industry.
y Advising ATA's Board
of Directors on internal
communications and
public relations.
y Supporting career
development through
informational material
and publications.
As part of the committee's
efforts to carry out this
charge in support of the
Association, its members,
and the professions as a
whole, we have a number
of subgroups that work on
various projects and activities
throughout the year. You'll
find these activities and
subgroups described below.
The ATA Compass Writers
Group: The ATA Compass
blog is a buyer-facing online
publication that aims to
produce content relevant to
clients of T&I services. Since
2023, the PR Committee has

T
sought to publish regular,
dynamic, and searchengine-optimized
content
for this audience via the
work of a team of authors
and editors, as well as guest
authors and other bloggers
whose articles are reblogged
on The ATA Compass. (You can
view articles and subscribe to
the blog here.)
Speakers Bureau: ATA's
Speakers Bureau has
long been the source of
spokespersons who can
respond to media inquiries
related to the T&I industry.
The Association receives a
varying number of requests
from journalists each year,
and it can be hard to prepare
for the myriad types of
inquiries we may receive.
ATA's spokespersons are
trained and prepared to
speak on behalf of the
Association, often on short
notice. (For example, in
2018, ATA Spokesperson Judy
Jenner was interviewed by
CNN regarding attempts to
subpoena Donald Trump's
Russian interpreter.)
New efforts by the
Speakers Bureau include
an initiative to proactively
pitch ATA presentations to
various organizations and
audiences that can benefit
from information about
T&I. Our spokespersons seek
opportunities to share their
knowledge and expertise on
ATA's behalf through various
methods, including online
presentations or webinars,
in-person speeches, and
podcast interviews. For
