The ATA Chronicle - May/June 2024 - 11
example, presentations were
given by ATA representatives
in 2023 to the following
groups: the Association of
Professional Genealogists and
the National Association of
Hispanic Journalists.
School Outreach: The School
Outreach Program encourages
professional translators and
interpreters to share their
passion for their jobs with
students of all ages, anywhere
in the world, in person or
virtually. The program also
runs a contest every year.
By sharing your story and a
photo of your presentation to
students, you could win a free
registration to the next ATA
Annual Conference! (View
resources and past School
Outreach winners here.)
Buyers Guides: ATA's PR
team has recently developed
a virtual guide to purchasing
translation services. This
digital resource can be shared
with clients or buyers new to
purchasing T&I services. An
interpreting version is in the
works as well! (Members will
be able to access the ATA Guide
to Buying Translation Services
on ATA's website soon.)
Client Outreach Kit: The PR
Committee also manages
ATA's Client Outreach Kit.
This is a tool for members
who want to present
information about T&I to
clients or stakeholders from
outside our industry. The kit
contains helpful instructions
about how to get started and
some resources you can use
to create your presentation.
(Download the kit here.)
Social Media: Did you know
ATA is on social media?
Following and sharing our
content is a great way to
promote your profession to
your connections. You can
find ATA on Facebook, X,
LinkedIn, and Instagram.
Outreach Initiatives: The PR
Committee is also involved
in ongoing initiatives to
assist with outreach for
ATA's Annual Conference,
collaborate with ATA's
Advocacy Committee (see
sidebar), and publish
information of relevance to
journalists, such as our Press
Release page and Media Kit.
Did any of these initiatives
pique your interest? Contact
ATA PR Committee Chair
Jamie Hartz to get involved
with all the exciting things
the committee is doing to
engage our audiences and

Calling All Writers! ATA's Public Relations and
Advocacy Committees Need Your Help!
Volunteer for ATA and put your writing skills to great use! The
PR and Advocacy Committees are seeking strong writers with
a passion for raising awareness about the T&I professions
to join their teams. Volunteers should be self-starters who
can work with minimal guidance to help draft content such
as press releases, blog posts, statement letters to decisionmakers,
etc. Volunteers must be current ATA members in any
individual member category. Contact Jamie Hartz (jamie@
tildelanguage.com) or Ben Karl (ben@bktranslation.com) to
learn more.

ATA Explores the Ethical Issues Facing MLB Interpreters
Interpreting can be fraught with ethical quandaries, especially
when the lines between interpreter, assistant, and friend are
blurred. ATA investigated some of these challenges in light
of the accusations brought against Ippei Mizuhara, former
interpreter for the star LA Dodger's player Shohei Ohtani.

ATA's Virtual Roundtable Discussing the Film Translators
ATA hosted a free virtual roundtable on Zoom to discuss the
depiction of children as interpreters in the film Translators,
directed by Rudy Valdez and presented by U.S. Bank. A
diverse panel of language services industry experts, including
researchers, language access advocates, and former child
interpreters, provided insights into the issue, explaining how
the film highlights many of the challenges child interpreters
can experience and how people who need professional
interpreters can avail themselves of their federally protected
rights to access them.
