speech, and physical
therapists who support
children as they progress
through specific academic,
social, and emotional goals
and objectives.
Prader-Willi Syndrome may
impact a student's cognitive
skills and is characterized by
a chronic feeling of hunger,
leading to life-threatening
obesity along with low
muscle tone. Some children
with Prader-Willi Syndrome
may qualify for special
education services under
the Intellectual Disabilities
category and may need
physical and occupational
therapy to strengthen their
fine and gross motor skills.
As part of their individualized
plan, children may need
specific accommodations or
aids to support their learning
and social skills.
Gerstmann's Syndrome may
result in eligibility for special
education for some children
under the Specific Learning
Disability category. Children
with this syndrome may have
a high level of intellectual
functioning but often
display poor handwriting
and spelling skills combined
with difficulty with math
functions. They may receive
special education services for
just a portion of the school
day to support them with
literacy skills and then spend
the rest of the day with peers
in the general education
classroom.
Turner Syndrome affects
females exclusively and
may impact stature and
ovarian function. The
syndrome may impact
visuospatial organization,
social cognition, math
abilities, and include

attention and hyperactivity
concerns. Some children
with Turner Syndrome
may qualify for services in
special education under the
Intellectual Disabilities or
Specific Learning Disabilities
categories.
Fragile-X Syndrome is a
genetic condition that may
impact cognitive processing,
behavior, and social skills.
Students with Fragile X
Syndrome often have sensory
sensitivities to sound, light,
textures, taste, and smell
that provoke hyperarousal.
Children with Fragile- X
often qualify under the
Intellectual Disabilities
special education category.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also
known as Brittle Bone, causes
bones to break easily. This is
a disorder that reminds us
that some disabilities require
specific non-academic
supports during the school
day because they don't
involve impairments to
cognitive abilities. Children
with this disorder will need
support from occupational
and physical therapists due
to orthopedic impairments.
Hearing may also be
impacted in some children.
Schools will need to conduct a
risk assessment to determine
how to prevent and care for
a fracture. This plan will
need to be carried out by all
teachers during school trips,
physical education, and
classroom activities.
Apert Syndrome causes
malformation of the skull,
face, hands, and feet.
Children may have varying
degrees of developmental
delays, often accompanied by
autonomous nervous system
difficulties and hearing loss.
Strive for accuracy with the
understanding that asking for
clarification and reclarification are
part of your tools to ensure equity
in communication.
Oftentimes, interpreters and
translators will encounter
reports from school nurses,
neurosurgeons, audiologists,
geneticists, and speech and
language pathologists who
assist with swallowing and
breathing issues.
Sensory Processing Disorder
may qualify for special
education under the Specific
Learning Disability category
since the disorder causes
difficulty handling the
information our senses bring
us. The disorder manifests
itself differently in each
child. Some children have
trouble being aware of their
bodies, which may lead
to struggles with balance
and coordination, while
others may have difficulty
paying attention due to
hypersensitivity to sensory
stimuli such as sounds,
textures (e.g., clothing),
or smells.
Being Prepared =
Being Empowered
Yes, the terminology
associated with multiple or
low-incidence disabilities is
overwhelming and complex.
However, I encourage you to
utilize the resources available
to arrive prepared for the task.
