Languages (NAETISL) in
mind. Strive for accuracy
with the understanding
that asking for clarification
and reclarification are part
of your tools to ensure
equity in communication.
y When interpreting,
remain impartial and
professional by starting
with your pre-session to
set the tone of the meeting
and remind families and
educators that collaboration
must occur for a meeting
to be effective.
y Be ready to interpret for
multiple parties with
multiple goals and agendas.
If you're a medical or
legal interpreter, become
familiar with the special
education process by
attending specialized
training in education,
as this will give you the
tools to understand the
complexity of this field.
y Interpreters and
translators must constantly
expand their personal
glossaries and connect
with existing resources
of information. NAETISL
offers a Clearinghouse
of Resources for Spoken
Language Interpreters and
Translators, where you'll
find links to free glossaries,
lists of psychoeducational
assessments and their
purpose, and translations
of special education
forms that can support
vocabulary growth
and provide additional
resources of information.
Understand that regardless
of your experience as a
legal or medical interpreter
or translator, the field of
education is unique and
deserves its own place with
interpreters and translators
willing to seek additional
training to be effective.
Most importantly, see
assets before deficiencies, see
opportunities before
challenges, rediscover your
purpose (your " why " ), and
strive to be an interpreter or
translator brave enough to
ask questions and dive into
the unknown. The reward of
seeing families and educators
connect and collaborate to
support a child's academic,
social, and emotional growth
thanks to your skills is a gift
and a privilege.
Ana Soler is chair of the National Association of Educational Translators and
Interpreters of Spoken Languages and founder of SeSo, Inc. She completed her
bachelor's degree in social work at Georgia State University, her master's degree in
public health at Emory University, and is studying for her PhD in special education at
the University of Georgia. She has authored interpreter training curricula nationally
and is an adjunct instructor at the University of Georgia (professional interpreting in education,
professional interpreting in special education, and professional translation in education). As
part of her doctoral studies, she and a team of subject matter experts are developing a national
certification pilot test for spoken-language interpreters in education. naetisl@gmail.com
