Overall, there's still much work to be done in
terms of building a professional infrastructure
that will make a significant difference in the
Vietnamese-language markets in Vietnam
and overseas.

almost half the total global population2
ietnamese, the name of a language and ethnicity that has
historic connections with the U.S., is spoken by about one
hundred million Vietnamese people living in Vietnam and
by approximately five million people living abroad. The U.S. Census
Bureau estimates that the Vietnamese American population in 2024 is
around 2,347,3441
, which means that Vietnamese Americans make up
of Vietnamese living overseas.
Coming from different waves of immigration, older generations
of Vietnamese Americans tend to have a lower level of education and
language proficiency than the overall Asian American population.
Literacy and education levels are generally better among the
younger generation of U.S-born Vietnamese Americans, but almost
two-thirds of foreign-born Vietnamese Americans (who became U.S
citizens due to their direct relationship with Vietnamese American
citizens) are still not proficient in English.3
Together with Title
VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination
based on national origin, and Executive Order 13166 in 2000, which
affirms Title VI's meaningful language access requirement, the
Vietnamese market in the U.S. has a lot of potential due to the large
population of Vietnamese Americans in need of language services,
which probably explains why Vietnamese-language services are
increasingly in demand.
