professionally, within and
outside the country. In the
domestic market, conferences
and seminars on T&I are
being hosted by universities,
organizations, companies,
and even individuals more
regularly. These efforts
have significantly raised
awareness of the importance
of language services among
the general public in Vietnam,
including future (student)
translators and interpreters.
For example:
y As national universities
have organized seminars
and conferences on
linguistics, some have
added T&I to the agenda, or
at least introduced T&I into
the topics of discussion.
the pre-1975 Vietnamese
is more similar to Chinese
in terms of its vocabulary,
the transliterations of
foreign-language names,
countries, places, etc., and
grammatical structures. (See
the IPA transcriptions after
the dashes in the table.) The
pronunciation of words in the
pre-1975 Vietnamese (U.S
version) is very similar to that
of Chinese while the modern
one is less so or not at all.
If you weren't previously
aware of these differences
between variants of the
Vietnamese language, you
probably are beginning to
understand why defining
the audience and selecting
the appropriate translator
or interpreter to perform
Vietnamese-language
services is so important.
For example, translation,
interpreting, and localization

not only name one of two
variants but also include
the intended region (e.g.,
U.S., Australia, Canada, New
Zealand). As mentioned
in the introduction to
this article, New Zealand
and the U.K. tend to have
younger generations of
Vietnamese speakers, while
older generations tend to
be found in the U.S. and
Australia. Therefore, the
specific audience will also
influence the appropriate
level of formality provided by
any Southern Vietnameselanguage
services.
Approaches to
Translation and
Interpreting: Challenges
and Achievements
Several efforts have
been made to support a
standardized Vietnameselanguage
services market,
both academically and
y Many professional seminars
and conferences on T&I
have also been organized by
companies and foundations
to bring attention to the
quality of T&I.
y Third, private centers for
T&I training now exist for
the purpose of educating
new and junior translators
and interpreters.
As for the markets
overseas, the Vietnameselanguage
market now has a
better position in Australia
and the U.S., where there
are official trainers for
interpreters and translators
from accredited training
centers and organizations.
Vietnamese T&I programs
are now available in Australia
and New Zealand. In the U.S.,
Vietnamese T&I professionals
can also participate in
language-neutral academic
programs. In the U.S.,
Australia, and New Zealand,
the requirements to be a T&I
professional also demand
professional training and
often certification, which
