outside the country. In the
domestic market, conferences
and seminars on T&I are
being hosted by universities,
organizations, companies,
and even individuals more
regularly. These efforts
have significantly raised
awareness of the importance
of language services among
the general public in Vietnam,
including future (student)
translators and interpreters.
For example:

have organized seminars
and conferences on
linguistics, some have
added T&I to the agenda, or
at least introduced T&I into
the topics of discussion.
the pre-1975 Vietnamese
is more similar to Chinese
in terms of its vocabulary,
the transliterations of
foreign-language names,
countries, places, etc., and
grammatical structures. (See
the IPA transcriptions after
the dashes in the table.) The
pronunciation of words in the
pre-1975 Vietnamese (U.S
version) is very similar to that
of Chinese while the modern
one is less so or not at all.
If you weren't previously

between variants of the
Vietnamese language, you
probably are beginning to
understand why defining
the audience and selecting
the appropriate translator
or interpreter to perform
Vietnamese-language
services is so important.
For example, translation,
interpreting, and localization
specifications for Southern
Vietnamese will ideally

variants but also include
the intended region (e.g.,
U.S., Australia, Canada, New
Zealand). As mentioned

and the U.K. tend to have
younger generations of
Vietnamese speakers, while

specific audience will also
influence the appropriate
level of formality provided by

Australia, and New Zealand,
the requirements to be a T&I
professional also demand
