© clean run Tuning Up Your Dog’s Jumping for Trials By Susan Salo I am asked often how I go about preparing a dog for a trial weekend. The answer is rather specific from dog to dog since each dog needs something special to prepare for a big weekend or a regional, national, or world competition. Depending on the significance of the trial, I might actually begin the tune-up process several weeks out to make certain there is enough time to have the dog truly prepared without overloading him with work or stress. You want the dog to peak in conditioning and performance levels at the correct time. For me the tune-up process is ongoing, beginning with a good fitness regimen to keep the canine athlete in top form. My dog’s regimen includes long walks varying from 3 to 5 miles per day, swimming the dog several days per week for short periods of time (10-15 minutes), massage work four to five times per week, along with handling drills twice per week, and some form of jumping work at least once each week. Your tune-up process will be more involved and take more time if you’re not doing this type of conditioning work and skill maintenance training on a regular basis, especially if your dog lacks good mechanical skills in some aspect of his jumping. at full jump height to see just how well the dog is organizing his body to come off the ground The facilitator jump is set no higher than 6"-8" and placed 3' to 6' in front of the full-height jump. This is how I evaluate the dog’s organization off the ground: • • • I first look at the placement of the hind feet to make sure they are close together. I then look to make certain the back is soft and the head comes down slightly as the dog prepares to leave the ground. Next I look to see how well the dog loads his weight over his haunches. If there is not much angulation at this point, that tells me the load was weak. If you were to try to jump straight up and gain height, you would first have to bend your knees. I next look to see how quickly the dog gets his shoulders out of the way of the jump. Often even skilled dogs are weak with this process from time to time.
