Backyard Dogs By Sharon Freilich As we ring in the New Year, I realized that last year I neglected to include one of my favorite obstacles, the broad jump (okay, that may be a stretch). I believe it is easy to overlook or perhaps avoid those obstacles or skills that we don’t like much. Your dog’s full understanding of any obstacle or skill depends on your capability to handle it from the takeoff side, the landing side, at a lateral distance to it, or just plain running with your dog. This year the USDAA changed the specifications for the broad jump, which has made it much more visible. To me the old broad jump seemed like an afterthought. If you don’t have a broad jump for these drills then you can substitute a triple in its place. And if neither one is available, you can substitute a regular jump. I have also included a pinwheel in this set of exercises. In drills where you do a front cross after the pinwheel, it is important to send the dog to the second jump while moving ahead and supporting the third jump. You need to complete your front cross before the dog takes off for the third jump in the pinwheel. If you have to deliver your dog to the second jump in the pinwheel, chances are you will be late for your front cross. Figure 1 Start with the dog on your right; you can practice either a front cross or a rear cross between #3 and #4. If you plan to attempt the front cross, then send your dog to #2 while you get in position to complete your front cross before the dog takes off for #3. If you decide to practice your rear cross, then you need to wait near #3 so you can send your dog and do a rear cross at #4. If handling #4, #5, and #6 on your left, you need to get ahead and be lateral to the weave poles before putting your front cross closer to #7. Positioning yourself closer to #7 also takes the broad jump out of the equation for your dog and puts you in a better position to finish the pinwheel on your right. Figure 2 Start the pinwheel with your dog on your left and you can again practice either a front cross or rear cross between #4 and #5. I vote for practicing both in different attempts at this drill. Your dog is on your right from #5-#9; at this point you have a decision to make. You can do a front cross between #9 and #10 and do a rear cross at #11 or you can serpentine #9, #10, and #11. The latter is more difficult because the #1/#4 jump is really where you want to be. Your dog likely picked up some speed on the approach to #9 so he needs a cue to bring him into #10. Many dogs attempting this exercise were well on their way to the weave poles as the handler moved to the landing side of #10.
