tant to do this calmly, almost cheerfully. The idea is to mimic the dog’s behavior (the dog pays no attention to you, you pay no attention to the dog). There is no anger, no sense of correction, just mirroring the dog’s behavior.

At this point the dog will do one of several things. Some dogs immediately run to catch up with you and try to leave the training area with you, some dogs don’t even notice you’ve left, some dogs decide to use the opportunity to really have fun, get the zoomies, and so on. In any event, your reaction should be the same: Continue out of the training area and prevent the dog from following you if necessary, but do not say anything. Sit down and appear to be occupied. Chat with a friend, read a magazine, pet another dog, anything that keeps you from focusing entirely on the dog left in the training area. Eventually the dog will notice that you’re not there, and that it’s kind of boring without you. Sometimes this happens almost right away, sometimes it can take 10 minutes, although that’s rare. When the dog notices you have left and starts to react, either by actively trying to get to you or by repeatedly looking in your direction (even if he hasn’t moved closer to you), come back into the training area. Do not address the dog, even if he’s jumping all over you with joy. Walk back to where you were when the dog got distracted and ask for the same behavior as before you left. If the dog complies, immediately reward like mad. If the dog gets distracted again, leave again and repeat until the dog does comply.

If your training facility is such that you can’t see the dog once you’ve left the ring, either have someone else stay in the ring to tell you when to come back, or just wait one to two minutes before returning. The vast majority of dogs will be looking for your return by then, and if the dog is still not focusing, you can just leave again.
