WRaPPing aRound a Cone/Pole Another game that builds the bending muscles is to teach the dog to circle an object, a cone, or a stick-in-the-ground weave pole. You start by standing close to the object and shaping the dog, using a clicker and treats, to circle the object. At first, it’s fine if the dog does this slowly, because we want to teach the dog to perform a complete 360° circle around the object. Teach the dog to go in both

directions. Once the dog understands what you want, you can start to throw a toy or food reward away from you when the dog has completed a circle. This gets the dog moving faster and driving harder, using his hind end to accelerate out of the turns. In the photos in figure 9, Thrill is making a very tight turn around the poles, bending his body and driving out of the turns. Ideally this should be taught with little to no handler motion

initially, then you can practice moving and sending the dog between two or three poles, trees, or cones, and practicing front and rear crosses between them. This exercise is fun for the dog, and is a great conditioning exercise as well. Click and reward the tightest turns with a jackpot or fun game of tug. Silvia Trkman has created a DVD explaining her method of doing this, Teaching Cik/ Cap, and it is an excellent resource.
