There seems to be a misconception amongst many that distance is all about
handling. It is not. It is all about dog training. If you can't run, you must be a much
better dog trainer and motivator in order to get your dog around an agility course
successfully. There is no magic bullet or secret pill. Successful distance work takes
a lot of training and effort. Depending on your dog, it can take years to get it down!

Food is calming so you may have trouble
getting the drive you will need using just
food. It is also nearly impossible to use
food as a thrown reward. I have seen people do it, but by the time the dog eats the
food, he has forgotten all about you and
the drive sinks. I want a reward that the
dog has to get, bring back to me, and ask
for me to use it again. Throwing food can
also cause a dog to sniff around because it

If you have a reward you want your dog
to enjoy, work with it away from training until your dog loves it. Only then
use it for a training reward. Just go out
and have a fun session just playing with
your dog and that toy and nothing else;
no contingencies, no rules, nothing but
play. After a while, your dog may learn
to love it. Only when the dog is crazy for
it should you use it as a reward in your

training, otherwise, it is just Brussels
sprouts. Great distance skills are dependent on the amount of drive your dog
has. If your dog didn't come with great
drive, then you must build it! The ability
to reward your dog with something she
really wants is crucial!
