Introducing the Obstacle

Last month I described the many and varied activities that I feel are an essential foundation before teaching the seesaw.
I will not introduce the seesaw until the dog is happy and confident in the areas described in the previous article.
This month I will explain the stages I take when introducing dogs to the obstacle itself.
So, with a happy and confident dog, we are now ready to begin!

The Bang Game

One of the first games I play on the
seesaw is commonly known as the
Bang Game.
I use a TipAssist to adjust the seesaw in
very small increments (see my article in
CR February 2014 for a detailed explanation of this training device). I set the
seesaw so that the dogs can hop onto the
low end of the board, with little or no
tip, to target the very end of the plank.
I can encourage four feet on the board
or a 2-on/2-off position if the dog is
heavy enough (see last month's article).
I will have previously asked the dog to
hop into this position on a number of
planks, including the end of the dogwalk. I proceed to shape the dog to hop
into position for reinforcement as
I gradually increase the amount of
movement by adjusting the TipAssist.

I do feel that it is important to introduce
board movement in very small steps.

Whee! Game

Once small dogs are happily targeting the

the board, I often play a game that I call,
Whee! This is simply moving the plank
up and down, slowly at first, and feeding
the dog as the board moves. This is just
another way of classically conditioning
the dog to enjoy the motion of the board.
He will have had lots of exposure to motion in foundation work, but now it's
added to the board. I gradually increase
the speed of motion and sometimes allow the board to bang on the ground.
When allowing the board to bang on the
