Play with your dog and then let him offer jump #1. As
he lands, he should see jump #2. Wait for him to
offer to take jump #2 as shown as shown here. As
soon as you see that he has committed to take jump
#2, toss the toy.

is important that you do not do this.
1. Place your dog in a sit-stay and
walk out to where you are going
to begin, let's say 10 feet forward
of the jump and 5 feet laterally
from the wing. Stop at that point
and stand still.
2. Raise your arm and then toss the
toy laterally from your position so
that it lands on your dog's line.
This establishes a cue for the dog
that he should look for his line
once my arm is up because as I
raise my arm and then promptly
throw the toy, my arm becomes
a precursor to the toy and, therefore, a look down the line. Later
you can fade the lure and your
dog will just focus down the line
you set once you raise your arm.

Do not use your body and motion to lure the dog to
take jump #2 as this handler is doing. You want your
dog to think and figure it out on his own.

changing the orientation of the jump
so that you are adding angles and
slices to your dog's path while still
having him look for his line and
committing to the jump in front of
him. Figure 4 shows some of the
various stages of this.

Drill 4: Independent 180s
If you were able to get at least 20 feet
of distance from the single jump, and
your dog was looking for the jump and
powering to it without checking in with
you, then you are ready to continue
your distance jump training.

While the previous drill incorporated
a stay, we are now going to go back
to letting the dog shape the skill
so there is no stay involved here.
I always found that if I have done
a great job with my one-jump skill
training, this drill will come together
very fast and it's very fun to watch
my dog's progression.

Increase the difficulty of this drill by
adding lateral and forward distance
until you can get very far away-40

Set up two winged jumps-without
bars-in a 180 configuration about 6
to 10 feet from each other.

3. When your dog looks at the toy,
release him to it.

1. Play with your dog and the toy
to create intensity and drive as
you get yourself about 15 feet or
more from the first jump on an
angle as shown in as shown in
Figure 5a.
2. Let your dog offer to take the first
jump and then move forward with
him to support his momentum.
3. If you have created enough value
for going through the uprights/wings
with last month's drills, then as your
dog drives through #1 he will see
#2 and say to himself, "Hey! I get
my toy thrown when I go through
those things!" That will be the motivation to get him to drive through
the second set of uprights. Throw
the reward to the landing side of
jump #2 as soon as your dog commits to taking the jump.
As you build this skill, it's important
that you don't lure your dog to jump
#2 with your body position and motion as in Figure 5b. The goal is to
create a thinking dog that is trying to
figure out how he can earn his toy.
