When attempting to excel at a given activity, the attributes relating to that activity must be identified and selected for. Since we concentrate on working dogs, we are on the lookout for ground-covering stride, intense toy drive, confidence, and curiosity. We do consider breed type and love to see a conformation prospect also possess working attributes. This does happen in each litter, but we will not retain a conformation prospect that is nervous, timid, or overdone in terms of coat and bone. This is matched with pedigree and record of success of the ancestors. We have found that the stronger the ancestors are for high achievement in working venues, the higher the percentage of offspring that possess these attributes. This is analyzed in terms of advanced titles, competitive yards per second on course, national- and world-level participation, and wins, jumping style, and stride style. We started with conformation lines and top winning conformation dogs. Ten years ago, about 30% of the pups in our litters exhibited

high-level working attributes. After 10 years of using this selection process, over 90% of the pups exhibit such attributes. Moureaux: Temperament is a biggie for me. I’m choosing dogs that are built to work. I am now breeding from children and grandchildren of my original dogs so I have a very good idea of what to expect from their puppies. MacVicar: After the prospects have been reviewed for pedigree, conformation, and size, I begin narrowing down the list by temperament. I like to breed my girls to males that aren’t on the top end of the Brittany standard jump height [because I prefer to breed dogs that jump in the AKC 16" height class rather than 20" for health reasons], but I have to say that size can be negotiated as there are no guarantees that breeding two dogs that are on the low end of the size [range] will produce small dogs. The priority is a review of pedigree for conformation, compatibility, and temperament/attitude of the parents and previous siblings.
