MacVicar: I agree that our shelters are full of animals for all sorts of reasons. I admire those who adopt from shelters and rescues because they are special people who may need to work through problems of [the dog’s] neglect and possible abuse. Breeders need to take responsibility for their breedings, follow the placement of their puppies, and keep in contact with the owners. Placement of puppies needs to be highly scrutinized as to whether the breed/puppy is the right home and right fit for the family. I do not agree with excessive breeding, and puppy farms need to be eliminated. Whitney: It’s not a realistic question, although the intent is good. Our animal shelters will always be full because there will always be people getting dogs for the wrong reasons and then dumping them, and there will never be a shortage of unscrupulous, uncaring people who view breeding dogs as a cash crop. Unless you legislate everyone who breeds a dog—a scenario filled with some pretty disturbing repercussions—this situation will never happen. Ultimately, the solution to the overpopulation problem lies in educating buyers.

What is the most difficult challenge With regard to breeding dogs? Plail: We find the most difficult challenge to be making the right match of the pup to the handler, while placing the dog’s happiness and life quality at the forefront. As agility grows, so do challenges related to the suitability of prospective homes. The challenge lies in finding homes with good handlers/trainers who aspire to do great things with the pup, while at the same time valuing the pup for his individual personality. In short the best homes value the pup for who he is, not only for what he does. As breeders we cannot get caught up in valuing only what a handler/trainer will accomplish for “our line” because being accomplished in agility is not a guarantee of a great home. Finding the right combination of love, nurturing, training, and stimulation for each pup is a huge challenge. In addition, we occasionally need to keep a pup for ourselves. This requires us to select a pup we love, who has the virtues we need in the breeding program, while still wanting to
