Backyard Dogs

The drills this month focus on the dog’s understanding of your tunnel cues. Does the dog understand where he is going after the tunnel? Here are some drills to practice and sharpen those skills. They’ll also give you a lot of practice handling different approaches to and exits from 270s. Have fun and break it down if the dog isn’t turning tight out of the tunnel or driving forward to the next jump. Remember, the dog’s understanding of your handling is shown as the sum of the parts. Figure 1: Lead out between #1 and #2. Release the dog and let him see forward movement as he enters the tunnel. Support #3 and decelerate to cue a tight wrap to #4. Finish #5 and #6 with the dog on your left. Your goal should be that the dog will follow you around the arc without thinking about peeling off to the off-course jump #1.

Figure 2: Lead out to the middle of the tunnel with the dog on your right. If you show no movement as the dog enters the tunnel, that should be his cue to turn to the left out of the tunnel to #3. With the dog on your right through #6, wrap him to the left on #6, using a threadle command to get him to the tunnel. Finish with #7 and #8 on your right. Figure 3: Lead out between #1 and #2. Show forward movement as the dog enters the tunnel, which is the dog’s cue to drive ahead to #3. Wrap him to the left on #3. Do a front cross between #6 and #7. Support #3 and move into position to do a front cross near the takeoff
side of #4. Support the dog on the 270 and take off for #7. Alternatively, you can work on your rear-cross skills by doing a rear cross at #4 and finishing as above. Figure 5: Lead out to #2. Send to #3 while you get into position to do a front cross close to #4. If your timing is right, you should be able to do another front cross between #4 and #5. Support the 270 and take off for #7. Did the dog try to duck behind you on the lead-out? If he did, then only lead out halfway and reward the dog as he comes up to your left side. Go back, set it up again, and lead out a little farther. Remember: you do not want the dog to cross in front or behind you. Figure 6: Do a lead-out pivot at #3. With the dog on your right, send him to the takeoff side of #6 and take off running for
