A few years ago I was in my ofﬁce going through Foundation mail when I opened a letter and found a check for $17,000 staring me in the face. I scrambled to look for the accompanying letter because I was so very excited someone had raised that much. There was just a simple note from AARF, Agility Addicts and Rover Fanatics, a group in Raleigh, NC. They had held a trial in honor of Lance, a dog that had died of cancer, and the proceeds of the entire event were to go to the Foundation. The letter was signed by Shelly Harris. There was just one problem; she didn’t give any contact information so I couldn’t say “thank you” for the tremendous job or how sorry I was that she had lost Lance. When I did ﬁnally locate Shelly Harris to thank her and her AARF friends for making such a stunning donation, she told me how much Lance had touched lives in her agility community and what good friends she had who supported her through the diagnosis and to the end when he lost his battle. Second Chance Lance was a rescue dog that Shelly saved. He became not only her agility partner, but her Shelly Harris and Lance heart dog.

Each year Shelly and her AARF friends have put on a Lance Memorial, always in honor of Lance and another dog that has lost the battle to cancer. This May will mark their ﬁfth annual NADAC trial where all of the proceeds are donated to the National Canine Cancer Foundation. In the past four years, Shelly and her AARF teammates have raised over $50,000 and they have inspired many other clubs to join the ﬁght and do similar fund-raising trials. One of the most successful follow-ups to the Lance Memorial has been the Texas Shootout in Fort Worth, Texas. Christi Farley and her team of dedicated volunteers from the Dallas/Fort Worth agility clubs put on a weekend trial that has pulled in over $70,000 over the past two years! Over the planning months for the Texas Shootout many Texas clubs donate money from rafﬂes held at their trials to add to the total raised. There are many more clubs and people out there who are inspired by their loss of a best friend, a heart dog. They take their passion and spread it by creating wonderful events such as these, which not only raise money and spread the word about this horrible disease, but also heal hearts and build a community of support for those who have been through or who are going through a diagnosis of cancer in their dogs. The NCCF wants to say a big THANK YOU to the agility community for supporting the foundation and coming up with fund-raising events to further the mission of the NCCF. Without you, our motto would not mean as much: “Together, We are the Cure.”
