Motivation
By Dawn Weaver, photos by Graham Bryant, illustrations by Sue Berleigh If your dog is naturally motivated to play with toys and you haven’t had to work too hard at it, then you are one of the lucky ones. For everyone else, the following may be helpful. Yes, some dogs will naturally play with toys, but these dogs are few and far between. Most dogs need to be taught to play, and that is the owner’s job. If you want a good agility dog then you have to create the play, and therefore the drive, which ultimately becomes associated with agility. The amount of effort you put into teaching your dog to play directly corresponds to the speed and value he places on agility obstacles.

Here are some other important training notes about toy play:
· Teaching your dog to play with a lead

Getting Your Dog to Play with Toys
Having your dog play with toys is easy to achieve if you go about it the right way at the beginning of your relationship with the dog. When I get a puppy or a shelter dog, I take him everywhere with me and get him out for a quick play session wherever I stop. Even if the dog only chases after a moving toy for 10 seconds to start with, that’s okay; you can build on that. But I always finish the play session before the dog loses interest. So my pups learn to play in friends’ houses and yards, outside stores and in public areas, as well as at agility competitions. If your dog won’t interact with you at all and is very distracted, just put him away and try later when he should be keener to come out again.
