Alphabet Drills By Nancy Gyes 1 Gimme a Z! Z 2 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 12 1 2 3 4 Z is for zigzag, a perfect description of the jump angles in these drills. This letter, shown in Figure 1, is more about exposing your dog to angled jump execution and less about how to handle the angled jump lines. If you have not taught your dog to recognize a severely angled jump in the same way as a straight-line approach to a jump, then start first with the “Jump Around the Clock” drills shown in Figures 2 through 4. Do them as a straight-line recall, facing your dog while both of you are centered on the jump, and then repeat them while facing the same direction in which your dog will be traveling. Your dog should stop in front of your body for a reward on the recalls to front, and he should stop at your side on the recall to side. In all instances start with the dog no more than 6' from the jump, and place yourself the same distance on the other side of the jump. Start with the bars low and raise them after successfully recalling your dog over even the most severe angles (9 o’clock to 3 o’clock and vice versa). If at any time your dog runs around the jump, take a step back and lessen the severity of the jump angle. If your dog runs under the jump, lower the bar. Never add a second bar to prevent your dog from running under the jump bar. Use just one bar on the jump and incrementally raise the height as your dog is successful at the previous height and angle. The Z sequences seen in Figures 5 through 9 start with the jumps very close together so that your dog can bounce through the jumps. Next increase the spacing as shown in Figure 10. In most cases the jumps should not be more than 10' on center. If you start with the jumps low, you must place them much closer together or your dog will not bounce through the drills. The distances that your dog will be able to bounce depend on your dog’s height, length of stride, and forward momentum. Go back and look at J drills in CR December 2005 for a description of bounce work on straight and diagonal lines as well as arcs. 3 4 Start your dog at 12 o'clock no more than 6' from the jump. Face your dog from the 6 o'clock position and recall him over the jump. Next place your dog at 1 o'clock and yourself at 7 o'clock, then place the dog at 2 o'clock and yourself at 8 o'clock, and so on. Repeat the exercise, but this time instead of facing the dog, face the direction in which the dog will be traveling to you. Recall your dog to your left side and reward. Now do the recalls to your right side from all the positions on the clock. 50 Clean Run | April 07
