The first advice for anyone with a dog that is consistently
knocking bars is to rule out the physical.

and we are constantly growing. I am always looking for better ways to cue. The more I learn how to get the information
to the dog earlier, the more I realize I am still sometimes late.

Peel agrees that there is no such thing as a perfect handler
and while we are all working to improve our handling, the
dog must understand he needs to keep the bars up. "Be the
best handler you can be," she says, "and teach the dog to be
the best jumper he can be."
Her advice? When you are training, practice things that are
not perfect. "Work hard to do a front cross perfectly, but practice it imperfectly. Do the same with the rear cross." Or shift to
turning cues too late, when the dog is already over the bar.
She wants the dog to think, "Oops, it's too late to do anything
about that turn until I land, but I can keep the bar up."

Conclusion
Peel believes that as owners and trainers we don't always
have sharp enough observation skills to understand why bars

are coming down. Most people, she says, watch the dog as
he is over the top of the bar but, "by then most of the jumping is done." It's more important to watch the dog "bunching
up" before takeoff or preparing to "bunch up" before takeoff.
"That's where the jumping is happening. I recommend that
you find someone who is really good at teaching other people to have a well-trained eye."
Gyes and Barry are big fans of video. Video your dog jumping
simple configurations such as straight lines, circles, serpentines, figure eights, and such. Then watch the videos over and
over. If you are lucky enough to have an instructor close by,
watch the videos together to see why bars are coming down.
They will also tell you, adds Barry, if there is a consistent angle, handling move, or distance that causes the problem.
Finally, be the handler you want to be. Barry sees handlers
with bar issues protecting the bars, whether consciously or
subconsciously, and worsening the problem. "Even if you have
a bar problem, you need to handle like you don't. Handle the
dog you want to have, not the dog that has a problem." D
