and toss the laterally so that it
lands on your dog's line.

toy, release him to jump and get
the toy. Play with him.

Now we will try to capture focus forward.
1. Put your dog in a stay and leadout as before.
2. Stop, face forward, and then
raise your inside arm to signal
your dog to look for his line. You
are not throwing the toy yet.
5. Wait to see if he will look for the
line. When he looks, even if it's just
a glance, release your dog and
then throw the toy straight ahead
of him as shown in Figure 1b.

Lead out and raise your arm. As soon as
your dog looks at the jump, even if it's just
a glance at first, release him to take the
jump, and then throw your toy out in front
of him on his line.

is consistently looking at his line

4. When the dog is instantly turning his head to look for his line
when you raise your arm, gradually start to add duration so you
are having him look at his line
for a longer period of time after
your raise your arm; however, I
never require my dogs to look for
their lines for more than a couple
of seconds. When I walk away
from my dogs on the start line
they watch me, not the obstacle
in front of them, until I raise my
arm. There is no need them to
stare at an obstacle while I walk
into position. Also, don't forget to
sometimes go back and reward
your dog for his stay!

drive into your stay so the dog gets
excited to go and look for the jump.
For example, after you lead out, talk
to the dog and try to get him revved
up about going. The more excited
the dog is, the easier it will be to get
him to look for his line.

You can also place a tunnel or another obstacle your dog loves after
the jump and see if that helps him
look for his line.

Progress the skill by increasing the
lateral and forward distance of your
lead-outs as shown in Figure 2.

Never be afraid to create and work through failure, and don't be cautious about pushing
your boundaries and your skills.
