I use the bars from my V-bounce apparatus (or spider), as shown in the
photo, to indicate to the dog where
elevation is to begin (the small hedge
at the beginning of the water jump
offers the same information to the
horses). Construction plans for the

I follow the same training protocol as
for the double and triple (using first a
stride regulator and then switching it
out for a nonwinged single jump) until
the dog shows me that he can do the
broad jump with care and confidence-
that means not touching a board or
cutting through the corner poles when
jumping it straight, on a slice, or on a
slight bend.
I use the V-bounce apparatus as shown
in the photograph for just the first two
to three training sessions and then
quickly fade it since once the dog has

the understanding, he no longer needs
the help of that tool. The V- bounce
apparatus can always be re-introduced
as needed to clean up the dog's performance if it becomes sloppy or careless.
In this case, I would only use the apparatus for a session or two.
Note: I never use the V-bounce for set
point work on the tire as it creates too
much visual busyness for the dog, and
I want to allow the dog to focus quickly
on the task, without clutter or any mixed
messages. I would only use the V for the
broad jump as presented in this article.
You could use it for the double, either
ascending or square or for the triple.

Summary
Do your dog a favor and allow him to
school over these different jumps prior
to expecting a great performance on
these obstacles. Your dog will return
the favor with brilliant execution of
the obstacles, leaving you free to move
about the course and set the lines for
him without feeling you need to manage
these obstacle to ensure success. D

to simply run across the boards.
