DM: I knew I had a special dog when we did so well at our first trial after only three months of training. LB: Describe your favorite non-agility moments with your dogs. MM: Hiking. Sparkie and I love to just be together no matter what we are doing We spend hours almost every day hiking somewhere in the U.S. Sparkie runs and runs and runs, checking in with me often, while I enjoy the different nature areas. Sparkie is a clown and always makes me smile. DM: I love it when Wazzu forgets to be perfect and just runs and darts around a field with abandon. We call it “crazy dog.” She’ll tuck her butt and run at me at full speed and then turn at the last minute. Sometimes she comes so close that I scream, and of course that makes her day. She gets a big smile on her face and races around some more. Training Notes We sought help from many well-known trainers, and they all recommended giving up on getting Wazzu to work at a distance. She was an under-confident Velcro dog. And her experience as my service dog had taught her she needed to be right by my side. I remember lessons where we were trying to get Wazzu to work just on the other side of a gate from me. No matter how high we made the gate, she would jump over it to get to me. Then I found Susan Perry, who turned out to be the right instructor for Wazzu and me. We used a food tube since Wazzu loved food. Susan had me throw the food tube a very short distance and then run over and open it for Wazzu. When Wazzu realized I would come and join her after she moved away from me, she became willing to work at a distance. We really didn’t spend a lot of time training this. We simply placed the reinforcer at a distance, and I would join Wazzu at the reinforcer. It seemed that my dog suddenly understood that distance wasn’t abandonment. Right away, we started getting Elite Gambles. Wazzu learned the whistle meant that she needed to work away from me.
