Start this exercise with your clicker in one hand and a single cookie in the other. Show your dog the cookie and hold it up about shoulder height in front of you. Make sure your dog sees the cookie. Now begin moving the cookie slowly toward your dog. If your dog jumps up

to take the cookie use your NRM and move the cookie slowly back up to your shoulder. Once the dog is still, start moving the cookie toward him again. At first, we will reinforce if the dog holds still while moving the treat an inch toward him. Click the stillness and then quickly

move the treat to the dog. You’ll need to be fast in delivery of the treat once you have clicked. The dog should not have to move forward to get the treat. The treat should come to him.

This series of photos shows the progression of the Slooooow Treats exercise, from holding the treat at shoulder height to holding it directly in front of your dog’s nose. Move through these steps over a number of short training sessions.

Many people are familiar with the idea of attention from dogs. But focus is different. Attention is a discrete behavior that is cued by the trainer. Focus is an ongoing awareness that is offered by the dog and highly reinforced by the trainer.
