Finding the Inner Naughty
To find your dog’s inner naughty, begin by observing your dog in everyday life. What does he naturally put in his mouth? What gets him excited and revved up? I’m not talking about dog toys, I am talking about everyday household items or activities. Does your dog enjoy chewing things, such as bully sticks, pig ears, Greenies, or your old running shoes? Does he go wild when you sweep the dog hair off the floor? Does your dog steal the paper towel roll and take off with it for a fun game of chase? While none is considered a traditional way to build tug drive, all are certainly a great start toward interactive tugging because the dog already has a natural inclination to play with these items or gets excited by these activities. When you have found your dog’s inner naughty, it is time to make an interactive game out of it by making the naughty item (or activity) a tug toy.

Because we are going to incorporate items and activities that can be easily found in the dog’s everyday life, it is critical that we stop for a moment and remind ourselves to proceed intelligently:

Do not allow the dog access to anything that is life threatening or dangerous! This includes car chasing, bolting out of doors, any aggression or reactivity, any chemicals or food items that are lethal to dogs, and so on. Be smart with what you choose. Do not be unfair to the dog. Only choose to play with inner naughty items or activities that you can have fun with all the time—do not choose something if it will make you angry at the dog part of the time, or worse yet, if you will punish the dog sometimes when he does it. Do not allow the dog unsupervised access to the inner naughty items or activities. The dog might ingest

something that can really hurt him or make him sick, or he might steal or destroy something that will make you really upset. This is no different than preventing him from destroying regular toys or being well-behaved in the house. Do not allow anything that will negatively impact performance in the agility ring. This includes tugging on the teeter board as it moves, grabbing number cones, etc. Do not incorporate tugging into your agility training until you absolutely know that the dog will play with you. Build the tugging away from agility (in many different locations) before using it to reinforce the dog. However, many of the inner naughty items are so exciting that the dog will tug right away! Do put impulse control on these items and activities after you have built the tug drive you want. You can maintain the tug drive and have an extremely well-behaved pet too!
