and taught hundreds of handlers and dogs, during those seminars I have seen hundreds of totally confused dogs trained with this method (sorry, the handlers variation or interpretation of this method). The method itself is excellent, but for some reason I feel many people overcomplicate it or do not understand it and confuse the heck out of the poor dog. Also, the 2 x 2 method is encouraged to teach the dog to weave in 12 days, which is brilliant and has got to be the fastest way, but should that be en-

couraged? The weaves are a complex exercise that brings into use muscles and tendons that the dog rarely uses except when doing this rather unnatural movement we ask of them. I used to be a fitness instructor and after working muscles we hadn’t used for years, or in fact hardly used before, we would always have a few days off to allow our muscles to repair and heal before giving them another bash. My personal beliefs with the 2 x 2 method is that it should be encouraged over two months rather

than 12 days, which I am sure will deliver the same results but with muscles that are better prepared. It may be the case that when somebody’s dog hits a stumbling block, rather than being a faulty method they are using it could be that the dog is tight in a certain muscle which prevents him from working efficiently for that particular task. All techniques have pros and cons and the 2 x 2 is no different, but I would like to emphasize that if done correctly it is an excellent method.

Channel Poles Okay, on to my own method, which is channel weaves. When I first started agility and was a few months into it, training my dog lots of bad habits, I came up with a great invention. I told people at the club where I trained of my new fantastic idea and they all said, “Oh, channel weaves.” I had no idea they had already been about for years. So although I technically invented channel weaves, it turned out so did about 5,000 other people many years before me, which I found very annoying. I have over the years put my own take on the method, which I hope you’ll find surprisingly basic and extremely easy, with great results. With channel poles you create a “channel” for the dog to run through. The dog starts at one end, with the reward at the other end, and runs through the channel to the reward. You close the two lines of weaves gradually and presto the dog can weave. Simple. That genuinely is pretty much what we want, but we need to add some things along the way to jazz up the dog’s performance a bit.
