Newman says, “My garage still hasn’t recovered [Newman rubberized in 2010]. I have random bits of rubber bound to the floor, and despite using the gentle blue painter’s masking tape to mark out the grids, we still managed to pull up chunks of concrete paint.” For those who don’t want to go to the trouble of making their own skins, Rubber on the Run and Clean Run sell pre-made skins and molded slats as well. These skins are then applied to existing equipment using glue. Applying the skins correctly is still a bit of a challenge because of the size of the rubber sections and the strong adhesive (put it down once and that’s most likely that’s how it’s going to stay!). After applying, the skins will need to be trimmed around the edges for a perfect fit. Josselyn, who applied Contactacoat on contacts for two agility clubs, used Rubber on the Run skins for a third club. She says, “That process was so much easier and cleaner. I came home glue- and stain-free! The only disadvantage to installing skins is that it really does take 4-5 people (for the A-frame, at least) for the final step of placing the skin on the contact.” Rubber on the Run uses only rubber provided by American Recycling, using their TPV granules, which are known for their color consistency, resiliency, high UV stability, and for being 98% dust-free. These granules are safe for use around small children and dogs. The weight added to an obstacle using Rubber on the Run products varies based on the specifications of the obstacle and number of slats used. Examples of the potential weight of the premade skins are: a 12' x 12" seesaw skin will weigh about 11 lbs. and an A-frame skin that measures 3' x 9' with eight slats will weigh about 33 lbs. per side. There is no warranty available at this time due to “a lot of human factors still involved to gluing the skins on after purchase, and care of the equipment (with the skins on) which will affect the life of the rubber surface,” according to Woz. Prices for Rubber on the Run products vary based on size and number of slats. Here are the ranges:
