I start teaching a Go on command very early in my dog’s agility training. I am acutely literal with
my commands and I try never to “lie” to my dog. I think the Go on or Go command is the one that
handlers most commonly use incorrectly. With small dogs, in particular, handlers often use this command
to motivate their dogs rather than for it to mean to drive ahead of them in a straight line.

This is another place where "Go on" should NOT be used. If the dog
believes the handler, the dog is going to land long after jump #2 and
have to turn hard.

dog to curl back in toward the handler if she is behind after the
tunnel. Also, if the handler doesn’t give a command on the approach to the tunnel, the dog will look back as he exits to see
what direction the handler wants next. This will immediately
put the dog on the path of the off-course jump as shown by
the orange dog path.
The handler should give the "Go on" command on the approach to the
second jump. Then on the approach to the third jump, the handler
should tell the dog "Back" to turn left.

Verbal commands must be proofed in the same way that all
our accuracy skills on an agility course must be. Weaves, start
lines, and contacts all have to be proofed against handler movement—verbal commands are no different.
Teaching the Go On Command
I begin by shaping my dog to go ahead of me and take a jump
by standing close to a jump that has no height attached to it. I
put a jump bump between two jump wings and then wait with
a clicker and toy at the ready. As soon as my dog even glances
in the direction of the jump, I click and throw the toy over
the jump. Using food isn’t ideal because you need to throw
the reward from increasing distances, but you can use food
inside a toy and throw that instead.Very quickly your dog will
start to move toward the jump on his own and you can wait
to click until the dog is committed to the jump. Once the dog
predictably moves forward and takes the jump on his own,
I start to add the verbal Go on as soon as the dog leaves me.

Dogs that are constantly told to "Go on" inappropriately don't believe
their handlers for very long and the handler will lose lost her
driving-ahead-of-her command and the accuracy associated with it.
