You need to think of the way you reward as creating an event!
It needs to be awesome.
One of the quickest ways to understand how well you are
rewarding your dog is to videotape your training session.
I know, I know, groan. But here is the thing... in my online
classes, one of the most consistent responses I get from my
students is how valuable they find videotaping. They start to
notice habits as well as energy and timing problems they never realized they had. Yes it is a pain in the butt, but it will really
help to expedite your progress and it's for your eyes only!

Your Perfect Picture
There are so many details in training any behavior that it's
easy to let some pass by the wayside. But as the saying goes,
"The devil is in the details." Although you may get frustrated
by the number of details and the clarity required to create
great behaviors, or even decent skills, the fact remains these
details exist and have a huge effect on your training results.
Before you can build your dog's understanding for your cues,
you need to know exactly what you want your dog's response
to be to your cue. In a nutshell this refers to your ability to visu-

alize the details of what you expect your dog's response to look
like. With this "perfect picture" in mind it is much easier to create
the behavior you want because your end goal is specific.
Before you take your dog out to train anything, create a perfect picture by visualizing

What you want your dog to do.

*	

How you are going to begin the session.

*	

What you are going to do when the dog succeeds.

*	

How you are going to react if there is failure.

*	

How you are going to end the session.

If you can't envision what the behavior and the training plan
looks like, then how you can you possibly teach your dog
what you want?
