For me agility is all about setting the dog's path. The sequence of obstacles set by the judge defines where
the path should lead, and setting the path for my dog through these obstacles is my job as a handler.
I want to plan my handling to set the line through as many obstacles as possible, generally three to five
depending on course complexity, so my dog will know as early as possible where he is going next, and
where turns are coming up, so he can plan his striding accordingly.

First it is important to look at the course
from the dog's point of view. Visualize the dog's path from #1 to #3. Is it a
straight line? No, which means something must be done to ensure the dog
sees and knows he is to do all three
jumps, and then there is a turn to #4. In

this case, setting a straight line from #1
to #2 will likely result in back and forth
correcting of the line through the box to
avoid a possible runout or wrong course
as shown in orange. Shaping the line
from #1 to #2 as shown by the path in
red is a better choice here.
The same is true from the exit of the tunnel through the box from #5 to #6 and on
to the finish jump at #7. If the dog turns

tightly out of the tunnel (orange path)
his trajectory over jump #5 will not put
him on the line you want to #6. He may
need two path corrections inside the box
to avoid a runout or stay on course. Setting the line through the box from out
of the tunnel can create a straighter and
likely faster path for the dog from #5 to
#6 (red path). D
