Pulling the dog from #2-#3 puts you out of position for handling #4.
The exercises this month are designed for dogs in Starters or Novice that are beginning to make the progression from lower class levels to higher ones. The emphasis is on getting the dog to approach and take jumps at an angle or “slice.” In addition, the exercises also focus on getting the dog to jump and turn toward the next jump with a minimum of “float” or “carry out” away from the more efficient line as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Finally, your handling goal is to avoid pushing or pulling the dog around the sequence so much that you eventually get out of position for the next jump as in Figure 3. Rather, you want to try to keep a relatively steady distance so the dog can move more freely to the next obstacle as illustrated in Figure 4.
To make your turns as efficient as possible, you need to practice putting the dog into handler focus before the turn. Failure to put the dog into handler focus before the turn not only can create a long carry out after the turn, but it may also force you to have to pull the dog along the desired line to the next jump or freeze your motion till the dog corrects his path, which can make your job of getting to the next jump harder. Although these exercises are intended for less experienced dogs and handlers, more advanced or seasoned dogs and handlers can benefit as well. The “slice jumps” in the middle of the setup are spaced about 15' apart in a direct line, which is plenty of room for most dogs to get from one
