Wrap
drills
and Rear
The title of this month's setup should actually be
"Wrap and/or Rear." Those two skills and the handling
cues for them can so easily be miscommunicated by
handlers and misunderstood by our dogs. You can
see in the examples from the 2015 AKC Nationals,
Figures 1 and 2, as well as the other jump pattern
examples, that once our dogs pick up a straight line
they want to stay on that line. It is not so much that
the dogs are reading a rear cross cue, but they are ignoring a wrap cue by staying on a straight line. Asking
for a wrap back to you occasionally ends with the dog
jumping long on the diagonal line and struggling to
turn back as in Figure 3a, or jumping long which can
be followed by back jumping as shown in Figure 3b.
Dogs need to be trained to turn at a jump and to wrap
back tightly when asked to do so. I like to play the
"opposites" game where I perform a sequence and
ask my dog to wrap back to me, followed by a front
cross or post turn, and then perform the same sequence and ask the dog to stay in flow and do a flatangled rear cross behind them.
Most of the wraps in these drills are pushes to the
back with a wrap, but I also have a few examples of a
drill on a diagonal line going against the grain of the
front-cross wrap as shown in Figure 4. The setup for
this month's exercises is shown in Figure 5.
The exercises in Figures 6-14 start with multiple
wraps and pushes to the back. Once you perfect
those, you can increase the obstacles in that exercise. When performing wrap-front crosses on the
backside of a jump, I keep my feet-and the rest of
me-on the landing side of that jump. Once I get myself to the takeoff side of the jump, I want my dogs
to stay in flow and go the long way in flow, and that
is what I would do if I was executing one of the flat-

Many dogs struggled to turn the correct
direction from #10 to #11. The dogs' natural
path "in flow" takes them to the right wing of
#10, so most handlers were fighting to get a
good left turn wrap.

If you are struggling with wraps, I recommend Sylvia
Trkman's Cik and Cap DVD, regardless of what handling system of agility you use. I find her concept for
teaching dogs to bend around a jump and do repetitive wraps is both a great gymnastic exercise as well
as extremely helpful in cueing wraps correctly.

your dog correctly read your verbal and physical cues
