Compare the Japanese to the forced front
cross (see CR February 2014) shown in
Figure 3 (https://youtu.be/f_ADVfXoNNA).
In the forced front cross, the handler draws
the dog to the takeoff side of the jump and
then performs a front cross (shoulders rotate toward the dog). In the Japanese, the
handler performs a blind cross (shoulders
rotate away from the dog).
Cues for the Japanese
The elements of handling for the Japanese are as follows:
Motion: The handler's motion should
be forward and continuous. There is
no rhythm change.

* Chest/Shoulders: The chest and laser pointer are pointed away from the
jump until the dog commits to the
line, then the chest and laser pointer
point forward toward the jump.
* Location: The handler should be at
least 8'-10' ahead of the dog when executing a Japanese. Because the shoul-
ders are rotating away from the dog
versus toward the dog, the dog does
not react to the cues as quickly as he
would with a front cross. Therefore,
the dog needs more distance between
him and the handler to react to the
side change. In addition, the handler
should be very close to the jump and
the dog's line as he completes the Japanese; otherwise, the dog could easily
run past the jump, earning a refusal.
* Eye Contact: The handler should
initially have a connection with the
dog off of the side away from the
jump. With many dogs, indirect eye
contact will be sufficient, but some
dogs may need direct eye contact at
the moment they land from the previous jump. When completing the
Japanese, the handler should have
indirect eye contact on the same side
as the jump. The handler should look
down at the dog's line and takeoff
point rather than forward, as looking
forward could cause a refusal.
* Feet: The feet should be pointed forward in the direction the handler is
moving. As the handler cues the side
change, she should step toward the
jump with the leg closest to the dog.
* Arm: The handler should use the
hand closest to the dog. Initially this
is the hand farthest away from the
jump, and then changes to the hand
closest to the jump.
* Verbal: The handler can use the dog's
name or a Come or Here command to
get his attention so that he knows to
come through the gap when he lands.
Training
The Japanese is based primarily on natural cues, so very little training is needed.
Obstacle-focused dogs will need intermittent reinforcement for coming
through the gap, so that they don't learn
to anticipate the cueing of the jump. See
Figure 4.
