Skills setting forms one of the most vital
elements of GJP, and helps judges develop
their awareness and sense of appropriate skills to use and work with when designing courses. It is a crucial part of what
makes up our courses, and with so much
discussion and opinions on what makes
great, safe, and appropriate courses, judges need to be able to justify their choices (if only to themselves) and know their
course designs, skills, and tests.
I always encourage judges to analyse
course maps and write the skills on the
map. This is something you can do at
home. Grab a course off the Internet and
list the skills you see on it. Which are
handler skills, and which are dog skills?
Are there any repetitive skills, or even
any inappropriate skills?

Lee Gibson has been competing in agility for 23 years and
judging for 18 years. He has judged Olympia, Crufts, and
all major finals in the UK. He has also judged international
events such as the WAO, and he has judged FCI events in
many different countries. Lee is also a sought-after trainer
and has taught in more than 20 countries. As a competitor,
Lee has competed at Olympia with six dogs (reserve in
2011 and 3rd place in 2017), at Crufts with five dogs over
15 years, and earned medals at the WAO, FCI Agility World
Championships, and European Open.
