7 RC There is a long distance to the middle jump in this pinwheel. As the handler crosses behind the dog, the dog is pulled to the right unless he is well-educated on both the rear cross and sending out to the middle jump of a pinwheel. Another important note about pinwheels: The longer the distance to the middle jump, the more handling is involved. The kind of pinwheel shown in Figure 7 can be challenging if a rear cross before the ﬁrst jump is necessary. The dog must understand how to go on to the middle jump. Teaching Go On An important skill to aid in teaching the dog to carry out on a pinwheel is some form of a Go On command. I teach the Go On during groundwork training before the dog has started jumping, long before the dog has been presented with the pinwheel pattern. A good Go On isn’t just for pinwheels; but if you don’t want to babysit the middle jump of the pinwheel, it is helpful to have this skill before you teach the pattern. Teaching a Go On around a bucket or chair as seen in Figure 8 is the ﬁrst step I use in teaching a dog to send out straight to a jump. © MARCY MANTELL PHOTOGRAPHY 8 Start with a Bucket For a small dog I like to use a tall plastic construction bucket, like one you can get from a home-improvement store. You can also use a jump without a bar. I don’t want the dog to actually jump in the beginning because I want to teach him to “roll” around the Go On obstacle. If your dog does not bend well, using a full-height jump may discourage an immediate roll around the obstacle back to your side. I don’t use a fence post because it is too similar to a weave pole and I do not want the dog to confuse the post with a weave pole. I usually don’t use trafﬁc cones because dogs see them on most agility courses and we want the dogs to ignore them when running. If the dog is on my right, I use my right hand and right foot pointed directly toward the right edge of the bucket. My upper body is slightly inclined forward. My shoulders are facing the bucket and I do not turn them to encourage the dog to turn around the bucket. In these drills you should have straight shoulders and feet pointed to where you want your dog to travel. 50 Clean Run | July 07
