Mentorship and Motivation Part 1 © CLEAN RUN By Lanny Bassham Mental Management Mentorship is an extremely interesting phenomenon when it occurs in agility. There is a difference between teaching and mentoring. Although most agility competitors who are frequent winners share the experience of having had many teachers along the way, they also credit a mentor who has played a significant role in guiding them down the road to success. Can we define a mentor experience? When does it happen? When is it not a mentor experience? How can we come to understand when we are mentoring and being mentored to? • Caring: A mentor is vitally interested in not only your success, but also in you personally. Caring about you means always wanting what’s best for you. • Confidant: A mentor must be 100% trustworthy. You have such complete trust that you’re able to go to your mentor and say, “I’ve got a challenge,” and know that if you share a personal confidence with the mentor that it will stay personal. This is a very special relationship. If you’re lucky enough in your life to have even one mentor, you are indeed fortunate. ® Prerequisites for Mentoring For mentoring to occur you need a mentor, an apprentice, and a teaching moment. The Mentor I believe that a mentor is someone who is capable, who is caring, and in whom you can confide anything—and who possesses all three of these characteristics at the same time. • Capable: A mentor is competent to help you in the area that she is mentoring. Now, parents are often capable in helping their children and mentoring to their children, but not in all areas. For example, if my child is learning to play the flute and I don’t know how to play the flute, I’m not capable of mentoring to her in flute playing. I am, however, capable of helping with spelling if the words are no longer than four or five letters. July 07 | Clean Run The Apprentice So, if a mentor is a capable, caring confidant, what’s an apprentice? Well, an apprentice is a willing student that trusts the mentor enough to seek her advice and to follow it. The apprentice is motivated to change by the mentor. The Teaching Moment Once you have a mentor and an apprentice with these qualities, you must have a teaching moment occur for it to be a mentoring experience. For a teaching moment to occur, you as the apprentice need to go to the mentor and say, “I need help,” and be willing to listen. I think many of us have mentors in our lives, but we don’t have the teaching moment. But when those two things come together—the mentor is available and you are ready to be taught—it can be a miraculous turning point in your life. 71
