Steinker writes in a conversational style and includes anecdotes about her own dogs, which makes the book feel more like a lesson with a friend than an instruction manual. It also makes it pleasant to read, despite its intense instructional and scientific nature. In fact, the book’s main fault may simply be its completeness; it has a lot of information and people who don’t love to read may be intimidated by the sheer size and scope of this book. The “Click” mentioned in the title is an indicator that Steinker’s methods use the clicker as an important training tool. She also addresses the use of TAG teaching (also known as Teaching with Acoustical Guidance) and makes that a major factor in her handling chapter. TAG teaching is basically using a clicker or other marker to indicate the exact moment that the handler does the desired move. People who dislike or disagree with clicker training may not be comfortable with this book, although there is quite a bit of other information available to make the book valuable. Most readers will find Click & Play Agility to be a useful book that they refer to again, over time. The photos in the book help show that a wide variety of breeds and individual dogs can benefit and succeed in agility by using these methods.
